Pakistan Information Commission Facilitates Citizen’s Access to 50-Year-Old Property Records

ISLAMABAD: In a remarkable display of transparency and accountability, the Pakistan Information Commission (PIC) successfully facilitated a citizen’s access to 50-year-old property records within just one month. This achievement underscores the commission’s commitment to upholding the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017, and ensuring the public’s fundamental right to information.

Sarfraz A. Bhatti, a concerned citizen, approached the Pakistan Information Commission after experiencing difficulties in obtaining property documents from the Capital Development Authority (CDA). His appeal was scheduled for a hearing on August 23, 2023. During the hearing, the CDA explained that the requested records date back to 1978 and required additional time to be allocated.

After a series of hearings and dedicated efforts, the Pakistan Information Commission successfully secured and provided all the requested 50-year-old property records to Mr. Bhatti.

Expressing his satisfaction, Mr. Bhatti commended the diligent efforts of the Pakistan Information Commission in facilitating his access to the information he sought. He stated that this accomplishment highlights the crucial role, the PIC plays in ensuring citizens’ access to vital public records.

The Pakistan Information Commission, emphasized the Commission’s dedication to its mission and stated that despite resource constraints, the Commission is committed to ensure that public records are provided to citizens within the stipulated time frame specified by the law. Citizens can file appeals with the Commission free of cost to access public records from any public body.”

Access to information is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan and Commission’s efforts are aimed at empowering citizens by enabling their access to essential information while holding public bodies accountable.

The Pakistan Information Commission commends the Capital Development Authority / public body for its dedication in tracing and providing the 50-year-old records to Mr. Bhatti (appellant) in compliance with the commission’s directives.
