Muhammad Azam

Chief Information Commissioner

Before joining as a Chief Information Commissioner in November 2018 Mr. Mohammad Azam has served as Federal Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He joined Information service of Pakistan after Central Superior Service Examination in 1981. During a long career of over 35 years as a Civil Servant he has served as Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Principal Information Officer (PIO) Press Information Department, Director General External Publicity Wing, Director General Cyber Wing, and Director General Internal Publicity Wing. As a federal Secretary and as of head of several Departments of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting he has supervised the work of thousands of Employees of multiple professions.

He has worked as the first Registrar of Press Council of Pakistan and Managing Director of Shalimar Recoding Company. During his long Career he has served as a Public Relations Officer to the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan and several Federal Ministers of Government of Pakistan. He has served as Registrar of the Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan for two and half years after his retirement as Federal Secretary.

He has also worked for one year in the United States Congress as a congressional fellow as a staff member in the office of Congressman Charles Wilson in 1987-1988. He has served for over eight years as a Diplomat (Press Attaché and Press Counsellor) in the Embassies of Pakistan in Washington, DC, United States of America and Berlin, Germany and interacted with many international media persons, intellectuals and think tanks during these assignments..

He completed 15 credit Hours of MA International Communication Program from the American University Washington DC. He is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, (MCSE), Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) and Network+ certified.

He has been actively involved in the drafting stage of Right of Access to Information ACT while working as Federal secretary, Additional Secretary and Director General of Internal Publicity Wing and has interacted with Honorable members of the Parliament, Civil Society Organizations and media person to evolve consensus on the RTI law finally passed by the Parliament in 2017.
